Periodization and load management

Structure across the season or the year, so that the hard weeks arrive on purpose and the easy weeks are prescribed rather than forced.

Horizona season or a rolling year
Deliverablea phase map with rules
Reviewat phase boundaries

What is included

  • A horizon map: what each phase is for and what it is not for
  • Progression and deload rules written before the first session
  • Load ceilings, and what to do when a week exceeds them
  • The indicators used to decide advance, hold or reduce
  • Alignment with the competition or event calendar where there is one
  • A tapering approach when the goal has a date

How it works

We work backwards from the date or the objective, then forwards from the athlete's current load, and reconcile the two into phases that can actually be trained.

Timeline

Usually planned over one season, one competitive cycle, or a rolling twelve months for athletes without a fixed calendar.

Who it is for

Athletes with a dated goal, and coaching staff who need a defensible structure for a squad across a season.

Questions we are asked before a first engagement

Training that develops strength and endurance inside the same programme rather than in separate seasons. It is what the market usually calls hybrid training. The work is in sequencing the two so that each keeps progressing and neither is quietly sacrificed.

Not by itself. The interference effect is real but its size depends on the modality, the proximity of the sessions and the total load. Adaptations compete when sessions are placed badly, the load exceeds the recovery available, or the phase has no stated priority. All three are planning problems.

A template cannot know your training history, your week, your equipment or your injuries, and it cannot change its mind when the block does not go as written. If a generic plan is still producing progress, keep following it. Planning earns its fee at the point where it stops.

The log is read before every scheduled review, against the plan it was supposed to follow, and the amendment is written with the reason for it. That is the whole service. There is no automatic progression that runs regardless of what happened.

Small corrections happen at the review cadence agreed in the proposal, usually fortnightly or monthly for an individual and at phase boundaries for a squad. The structure of the block itself is meant to survive the block, otherwise it was never a plan.

If the question is specific to your situation, it is faster to ask it directly than to look for it here. Describe the goal and the week you have.

What it takes to start

  • A horizon of at least eight weeks. Below that, a plan is a schedule, not a progression.
  • A willingness to record sessions, honestly, including the ones that did not happen.
  • Medical clearance where a condition, an injury or a long layoff makes it appropriate.
  • A realistic statement of available days, hours and equipment, not the ideal week.
